"ART AT THE TOP OF THE WORLD"
explores the indigenous art of the peoples of North America, (Alaska and Canada,) Greenland and Scandinavia. 10% of proceeds from this are donated to the National Resources Defense Council, (www.nrdc.org) who works to protect not only the unique and large number of species of animals that inhabit the National Arctic Wildlife Refuge, but to sustain the way of life of the indigenous peoples there. The many species of wildlife that travel through this region of the world are identified in the works of art we view and also in the works we create, as we learn how these animals show up in indigenous art and what the significance of these animals have been to people through the ages. We are taking a break from teaching this camp, but hope to repeat it in 2018!

THE DRAGON BOAT
FESTIVAL (ART OF CHINA) In 2016, Participants learned about traditions and beliefs of long ago, as they celebrated the Dragon Boat folk festival which happens each year in China. We ate with chop sticks, made a dragon from paper mache' and practiced The Three Perfections in Asian art: Calligraphy, Poetry and Painting, taking inspiration from ancient works of art from several dynasties. (We will take a break from this camp this year, but hope to return to China soon!) (Below is a group photo of our China camp in 2017.) |

VINCENT :
IN 2016, SPENCER'S COFFEE SHOP GAVE THE CAMPERS AT ART MATTERS PERMISSION TO SET UP EASELS IN THEIR LOVELY COURTYARD, SO THAT WE COULD BE INSPIRED TO PAINT THE CAFE, IN MUCH THE SAME WAY THAT VINCENT VAN GOGH PAINTED ONE OF HIS MANY MASTERPIECES, THE "CAFE TERRACE, PLACE DU FORUM, IN ARLES, IN 1888. PHOTOS OF STUDENTS' WORKS, POSTED BELOW, ARE THE RESULT OF THAT ACTIVITY. (CLICK ON ANY OF THE STUDENTS' WORKS TO ENLARGE THEM.) WE WILL BE DOING THIS AGAIN IN 2017!

THE ART OF THE SOUTH
(Clck any photo on the right to enlarge.) "Laissez le bon temps rouler!" EACH YEAR, 10 % OF PROCEEDS FROM THIS CAMP HAVE BEEN DONATED TO THE SOUTHERN POVERTY LAW CENTER - This five-day art workshop integrates music and art. It celebrates jazz music and five famous artists that came from the southern United States, as well as five famous musicians from the South! Last year, Alesia Spear, well known WKU piano instructor, provided participants with experiences in improvising at the piano keyboard as students learned about different jazz styles, scales and techniques (swing style, the blues and bebop.) This year Art Matters will feature other local musicians who will drop by to perform for us! Each year, Art activities include poster paints, collage, 3-D sculptures and print-making with subject matters of things that children will recognize: people making music, landscapes and historical events of their southern, rural homeland. A donation from this camp goes to The Southern Poverty Law Center, (www.splcenter.org) which teaches tolerance and works for justice. Last year his camp collaborated
with Alesia Spears, local piano teacher, to provide music and art integration! |

LEONARDO'S ART AND INVENTIONS
This camp integrated art with math and science last year. We had so much fun, we will definitely repeat this camp again in the future! Leonardo was a self-taught artist and inventor. This camp involved nature, as Leonardo carefully observed plants and birds, which helped him with his drawings. He also discovered things about human body proportions that can help us in our drawings of people and animals. Other projects included map making, simple machines, painting and sculpture, as we talked about what life must have been like in Italy during the age of the Renaissance. One of the most fun activities we did last year in this camp was when Mr. Michael taught us all how Leonardo had made improvements on simple machines like the pulley and we all got to demonstrate how it worked, by using our machine to pull every student up as far as we could. (Good thing Mr. Michael did not also help us to demonstrate the catapult or some of our students could have ended up at the Hot Rods Baseball Park... )

ART HERSTORY (WOMEN ARTISTS)
THIS CURRICULUM WAS CREATED WITH GRANT FUNDING FROM THE KENTUCKY FOUNDATION FOR WOMEN
AND EACH YEAR IT CONTAINS NEW ARTISTS AND NEW ACTIVITIES!
THE PHOTOS BELOW ARE FROM 2015, WHEN WE HAD FUN DOING ART ACTIVITIES INSPIRED BY THESE WOMEN ARTISTS IN HISTORY: EMILY CARR, ARTEMISIA GENTILESCHI, GEORGIA O'KEEFFE, MARGARET KEANE AND CLARA DRISCOLL! THE LAST ROW OF PHOTOS SHOWS WELL KNOWN ARTIST, LESLIE NICHOLS, SHOWING CHILDREN HOW SHE MAKES ART WITH TYPEWRITERS AND OTHER LETTER PRINTING. WE ALWAYS INVITE GUEST ARTISTS DURING OUR HERSTORY CAMPS!
AFRICAN ARTS AND ELEPHANTS
10% OF PROCEEDS FROM THIS CAMP IS DONATED TO
THE DAVID SHELDRICK FOUNDATION -
This camp explores the art of several countries in Africa. Ten percent of the proceeds from this camp is donated by Art Matters to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org) to help in their work to protect and preserve the “African Wilderness and it’s denizens, particularly endangered species such as elephants and Black Rhino.” Art Matters did adopt an orphaned baby elephant, for the second year in a row and contribute money to its care, providing updates to the campers via email throughout the year on the progress of their adopted elephant. We hope to bring this camp to Art Matters again in the future, but this year we are looking forward to the BIOMES AND ENDANGERED ANIMALS camp, so we can enjoy The Photo Ark of National Geographic Photographer, Joel Sartore. We will still be adopting an orphaned baby elephant this year at Art Matters! This is sure to inspire campers to make their own “elephant art" and learn more about what we can do to keep animals from being endangered in the future.

THE RIVALS: PICASSO AND MATISSE
The artists Picasso and Matisse knew each others work very well and often tried to out-do each other! There was an on-going competition between the two artists and we made art inspired by both of them. Activities included painting, paper collage and cubism. Participants in this camp took a trip to The Pot's Place on Main Street, to work with Cutivetti Dye, local ceramic artist, to make 3-D pieces with real clay! Here are some of those photos:
