"MY HANDS SING THE BLUES"
The Last Great Summer Session of 2022

The reason this session may have been the Best of Summer, is because there was music, as well as art instruction and we were so fortunate to have so many instructors!  Special thanks to Hugh Trimble, who helped us learn, specifically about Blues Music and by constantly having improvisational jams with the children, (whereby they would run and get their instruments and play along. Just check out the video attached at the end of this week's photo blog to see one sample of our jam sessions!)  Thanks to Magnolia Gramling, who has been my long-time helper and has innate patience and joy for working with young children.  Thanks to Lauren Bridges, Montessori Teacher, who helped hugely behind the scenes, making things run smoothly all the time and thanks to Emma Bridges, who was my right hand woman all summer.  (Now that she is leaving for  college, will I ever find a better assistant?...) Last, but not least, thanks to Romare Bearden, a great American collage artist, Betye Saar, contemporary assemblage artist and Faith Ringgold, contemporary artist of painted quilts, who, now that she is in her 90's, just had a photo spread in the current issue of Juxtapose Magazine.  By viewing their works and learning about their lives,
they taught us that
Art Matters.

Thanks to these folks who made this session great! Lauren, Hugh and Magnolia!
Thanks to my assistant, Emma Bridges!
Thanks to Great Families who sent Wonderful Young Artists to visit us this week!

ARTS OF ASIA
We began with Indonesia, where women invented the Batik process in the 12th Century and it spread around the world.  Our main project for this week was Batik, but we also talked about China, where one of the oldest living civilizations began and where a lot traditional Asian art first occurred, like paper and print making.  China shares with Japan the "three perfections":  poetry, painting and calligraphy.  We tried all these things, including Japanese Sumi-E brush painting. And Amelia Gramling helped us create our own Hiaku!  Batik is a hot beeswax and dye technique that finally requires ironing all of the beeswax out of the fabric.  I plan never to do this again in the summer...  I decided it is a wintertime activity.  But I found my friend the bee keeper is a great resource for material, so I do hope to do this more!  It resulted in brilliant, colorful designs!  We also celebrated India, with Yoga (Thanks Janet Jackson, for being our visiting yoga  instructor a couple of times this week! ) We made Mandalas too!  Some of the Best Families and Friends attended our art show!

Thanks so much, Valerie Chaney for your volunteerism! (And thanks Gus, the new Art Matters pup for the entertainment!)
Thanks Always, Emma Bridges, our resident artist, who will go be a student in the WKU art department soon!
Thanks Amelia for the lesson in Haiku!

    Author

Teresa Christmas has done many things, including and especially, she has been a mom and a GrandMama'  Currently, she is also still creating art and teaching art to young artists.  And somehow 20 years went by while she was doing that.  She designed all of the summer art sessions posted here.  These are just some photos that were part of the result. A lot of people have attended or volunteered or helped or donated to Art Matters Community Studio over the last decade, so she reckons it really is a special place.
